Beautiful New Guest Bedroom

Just before Christmas we transformed a tired guest bedroom into a beautiful, luxurious bedroom that the clients now wouldnt mind having as their master bedroom.

The room was fairly small, with two large windows, so we felt it would to too over powering to have curtains. We opted for silk blackout roman blinds. The fabric was from Design Forum - their Climbing Leaf in Crimson.

The wall behind the bed was papered in Romo's Simonii and the other three walls emulsioned with The Little Greene Paint Company's First Light matt emulsion.

The bedding was silk in creams and golds with an assortment of cushions in different shades of gold, and different textures.

Glass bedside lamps with cream shades, and a gold shell-like pendant light were chosen for the lighting.

A painting of a "red lady" was hung above the bed (the whole scheme was worked around this painting - the client loved this painting).

We added a few red cushions and accessories to tie the whole scheme together, along with oak furniture.

A warm and very inviting bedroom was created!

Ghyll Manor Hotel Unveiled

In November I was approached by the Manager at the Ghyll Manor Hotel in Rusper to rejuvenate two of their public rooms - the Terrace Room and the Conservatory.

I was given a very precise brief - to keep the traditional feel of the Terrace Room, which is where weddings are conducted, and to add an art deco feel to the faded Conservatory. We had just 4 weeks to achieve everything - it had to be ready for the start of the Christmas festivities, and that included sorting out and putting up the new look Christmas decorations.

It wasnt without problems. An old building like Ghyll Manor, can throw up all sorts of problems, that had not been expected. However we did finish on time and Antony Osborne-Ford, the Manager was delighted.

Dress to Impress

A window is very often the major focal point within a room, therefore its dressing requires careful attention and thought.

Windows should enhance the character of your room. Each window should be treated both individually and as a group within a room.

Where do you start? Short length curtains are best for a country cottage look, whilst full length curtains will complement most rooms, whether traditional or modern. Sheers or voiles are good in modern homes, where you want to diffuse the light, but have a nice airy feel.

Where to start : -

Do you require privacy?
Do you need lots of light?
Do you want to get the most from a beautiful view, or disguise an ugly one?
What is the function of the room?
Do you want trimmings?

You can change the atmosphere of a room just by varying the fabric or style of curtain. You can go from classic to modern and the room is transformed.

I could probably write a book entirely about curtains and fabrics, and many people have. But I believe one of the main considerations, whether the fabric is an expensive silk or simple cotton, is always ensure they are beautifully handmade. A good curtain maker will not use heading tapes, but will create the pleats by hand, and hem by hand. There is always a bit of pulling if a machine is used, so handmade curtains will hang better. If you want your curtains to last they must be lined, or even interlined.

Eyelet curtains are very popular, especially in more modern homes. The beauty of eyelet curtains lies in their simplicity. They can be made in any fabric, and although they go best in a modern home you can also match them to a more classic style.

Pelmets are good for covering ugly tracks, and give a formal look to tall period windows. If you want them to look a little more modern consider having a plain fabric for the pelmet and using the same fabric as a contrasting leading edge for the curtains.

Design Tip 1 : Need privacy, overlooked by neighbours? Hate those old net curtains? Then why not have a roman blind made in a voile, there are so many beautiful inexpensive voiles to choose from, from plain to embroidered, from white to all the colours of the rainbow.

Design Tip 2 : Not sure how it will look in situ? Before you commit to buying a fabric, purchase a large returnable sample. When it is in your home drape it over a pole and live with it for a week or two. Fabrics look different in different lights so they will look very different in your home compared to how they look in the sample book.

Poles and Finials?

Once you have decided on your curtains next you need to think about your pole. There is a massive choice available, wooden, metal and even glass or perspex. On the ends of the poles we use finials. Finials nowadays come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, from glass balls filled with coloured stones, to crystal finials, lion heads, textured metals or simple wooden balls.

Trimmings are still popular – whether beads, braid, ribbon, tassels or even feathers. My favourite trim that really excited me was one we used for a client's landing curtain. The trim was made from swarovski crystal. When the crystals caught the light they sparkled – absolutely beautiful.

Let Their Be Light

Blinds are great way of letting in more light, especially for a small window, where there is not enough room for curtains.

Roman blinds are very often used in kitchens and bathrooms, but please don't disregard using them in the bedroom or living room, or anywhere else for that matter. In a bay window, using roman blinds will help retain the shape of the window, so that it still remains the focal point of a room.

They are both economical in terms of curtain material and very practical in restricted spaces, and can be stunning designs in their own right.

Measuring:-

Roman blinds can sit either in or outside the recess.

For inside: measure the length from top to bottom of the recess.

For the width measure at top of the window recess where the blind is to be fitted. Measure the width at two further points (in the middle and bottom). The lowest measurement of the three is the one you will need to use.

For outside: measure the length from the required position above the window to the required length.

For the width measure the width of the window and add approximately 5-10cm each side to allow overlap at each side of the window.

I met with a lovely lady in Storrington back in late January. who desperately wanted a new kitchen. She was a very keen cook and wanted a practical kitchen with plenty of space.

We decided to do away with the old breakfast bar with cupboards above, as this was taking up too much room and restricting the space and natural flow of the room. The old extractor was removed and a more modern black steel extractor took its place, as did the wonderful 7-ring black range. We had a large pullout larder installed as well as a large black American fridge freezer.

We chose a slate grey Karndean for the flooring.

The client went off on a cruise for two weeks and we got started. The kitchen was designed, installed and completed by the end of March.

CONSERVATORIES AND GARDEN ROOMS - PART ONE

Adding a conservatory to your house, not only gives you extra space, but could increase the value of your home. But when designing it think about how you and your family are going to use it.

So many times I am told by clients who only use their conservatory for half the year, that it is just too cold in the winter, and if we have a particularly hot summer, then it gets too hot! How can we ensure that our conservatories are used year round, after all what a waste of time and money if you only use it for 6 months of the year.

Before you start to look at conservatories think about how much you want to spend. A conservatory with all the trimmings (lighting, heating, flooring, decoration, furnishings etc) may cost a lot more than you would expect.

Do check as to whether you will need planning permission. It is not normally required provided you do not exceed the permitted development limit for your property (which is 50-70 cubic metres, depending on where you live). There are exceptions – listed buildings and conservation areas. And don't forget if your property has been previously extended, then you will have used up some of your “permitted development” area.

Consider how the conservatory will look from the outside. Will it reflect the style of your house?

What do you want it made from? The three main materials available are PVCu, hardwood or aluminium. PVCu is probably the cheaper option and hardwood is more suitable to older properties. Aluminium is similar to PVCu, but is stronger, more expensive and not such a good insulator.

Which direction do you want your conservatory to face? South facing will get the sun, but you will need good ventilation and good quality blinds, or it may feel more like a sauna than a conservatory in the summer. North facing will have the reverse problems, in that the conservatory will receive very little sunshine and will require heating for those cooler months.

At the outset think about heating your conservatory, do you want radiators or under floor heating? Ask your conservatory company about the different options available for the roofing material. Roof blinds can be a god send in the summer. There are many different types available and many different colours to suit whatever scheme you have in mind.

Blinds or window films can protect you in the hot summer months. While they both perform similar functions by reducing heat gain, the blinds will bring alive your interior scheme whilst also giving the added benefit of privacy if your room is overlooked. Window films are more concerned with heat gain, and in this respect may perform a little better. They are also good at reducing glare and fading, which will be particularly useful if you intend to use your new conservatory as a study or office, but still want a view of the garden. You could always use both by adding blinds to the roof and window films to the sides.

Vibrant Purple

Our client requested an elegant bedroom.

We started with a feature wall using a Designers Guild wallpaper - Tokyo Dahlia in gold and cream. The 3 remaining wall were painted using an emulsion from The Little Greene Paint Company - Creamerie.

To give a bit of drama to the room, we chose purple. We used the purple in a fabric from Villa Nova - Porto Lupin. And for that extra opulence we interlined the pinch pleat curtains. We teamed the curtains with a Regency gold and cream wooden pole.

Then added beautiful Regency purple tiebacks

Ivory coloured wardrobes were purchased, and matching bedside tables. We also added a brass and cream bedhead.

The bed linen was a bargain. We came upon it unexpectedly and surprisingly in Sainburys of all places. The duvet cover, cushions and throw all came from Sainburys, at a total cost of just £40. Who said inter
ior design had to be expensive?

And what did our client think of it? "The room is beautiful. I just keep popping upstairs to have a look - I love it."

Look Before You Leap

I met a lady recently who had called me in to work with her, having had a builder knock down a wall and put in a new kitchen to give her a new large family room and kitchen - a lovely big space!

However, she hadn't stopped to think about how she would use the space, and how she wanted the room to look, and also how it would fit into her own beautiful Victorian house, and she is not alone so many people do this.

So why did she need me? It had all been completed hadn't it? Well no - this particular lady hated it! Obviously she couldn't rip out the new kitchen but what could she do? and what should she have thought of so that she wouldnt have ended up in this situation.

Firstly, yes a builder can do the job - no problem. But is the builder going to advise you on colour scheme and how this kitchen or that kitchen will look in your beautiful Victorian house. Some may, but very few. Look in magazines, visit a kitchen designer or an interior designer.

Think about the design of the kitchen - how will it gel with the family room? You may still want it to look like two different spaces, but they shouldn't fight against one another. A very modern kitchen, but very Victorian family room is going to look odd. However there are ways around this. Carry through the same flooring and continue the colour scheme. If the dining area is all pine and the kitchen black gloss, then perhaps have a work surface that will compliment the pine - either a cream granite or quartz or even an oak worktop, and put some black in the family area.

For this particular lady we will be changing her worktops, fitting new oak flooring through the entire space and changing the layout of the family area, along with a few other touches to make the whole area feel welcoming.

Let There Be Light

The correct lighting can make all the difference to a room. The smallest, darkest room can be transformed at night with the glow of a correctly positioned table lamp and some candles. Likewise a lovely room with just a single ceiling light can look quite cold with dark shadows forming on the walls in the evening.

If you are on a tight budget you may think that updating your lighting is something you can manage without. Not so, lighting can transform a room, and does not have to cost the earth. Many chain stores offer good lighting at affordable prices.

At the same time as planning the new decoration of a room, think about the lighting scheme. There is no point after the wallpaper is up and the walls painted to suddenly decide to call in the electrician, who will make a mess “chasing out” the walls to install new wiring for your new lighting. However if you would prefer not to go to the expense of having your walls chased, there are a ways of achieving an instant new lighting scheme.

Add table lamps or floor lamps. Floor lamps bounce light up onto the ceiling and the light is reflected back down into the room, giving a soft and pleasing feel to the room.

Different rooms require different lighting. For example, bathrooms should have lights at the mirror, otherwise how would us ladies see to put on our make-up and you guys certainly need it for shaving. The light should be positioned between the person using the mirror and the mirror itself. Kitchens however are completely different, a good deal of task lighting is required over work surfaces for food preparation, over the sink and over the hob. It is a good idea to have more than one circuit of lighting in a kitchen, especially if you have an open plan kitchen/dining/family room. In this way you can switch off the lighting over work areas and have softer lighting over the dining table or for relaxing in the family room.

It is just as important to think about lighting commercial environments, whether it be a shop, restaurant or in the case of the photo below a funeral chapel in Worthing that we designed a couple of years ago. A lot of time was spent thinking about how best to make the lighting work for the chapel. Light boxes were used. Different colours wash the windows, the colours being chosen by the bereaved family.

I recently attended a stained glass workshop in Abinger Hammer, Surrey, run by Amanda Winfield. Amanda's work is amazing. Check out her website www.abinger-stained-glass.co.uk.

When we think about stained glass we automatically think of church windows, but there is so much more. We can use it in our homes - for doors, windows etc and designs can be contemporary or traditional.

Story of a Kitchen - part II

The work continued prior to Christmas and the kitchen was completed in time for the client to cook her Christmas lunch in her new kitchen.

Silestone worktops were installed and templating done for the sky blue glass splashbacks and glass bar.

The Story of a Kitchen

Back in the middle of October I was asked by a client to design a new kitchen for her. The proviso - it must be in for Christmas.

I thought I would write down the process I go through in order to design for a client.

Firstly, it is essential that the designer sees for herself the clients home, and not just take measurements from the client!

Then it takes a good relationship to build up between the designer and the client, so that the designer is fully aware of how the client and family live.

Next lots and lots of measuring, and then measure again!

I then go away armed with as much information as possible and start to design the kitchen.

There are always changes to be made and compromises. The budget is also something that has to be adhered to. Once all is agreed the hardwork really starts.

A project plan is organised, with the different trades all knowing when they need to be on site. If one person doesn't show up then this causes a knock-on effect which is not going to happen on one of my projects!

Work begins in earnest, old kitchen is dismantled and will either be sold or placed in the skip, appliances arrive, new kitchen arrives, underfloor heating arrives, and so do the hardworking guys.

and then the snow arrives......... not part of the plan

and does that stop us - NO!!!!

The units are all installed, as is the underfloor heating, and the silestone templating takes place.

Interior Design for Holiday Homes

Prior to becoming an interior designer I spent 10 years as a Quality Services Manager in the holiday industry. My job was to visit hotels, villas, apartments etc and ensure they were up to standard and that they complied with all safety regulations. I spent many years travelling all over the world looking at fabulous properties as well as grotty ones (and let me tell you there were quite a few grotty ones).

This gave me a real love of travel (much to my husbands dismay, as we now have to pay to travel) and passion for the very different interiors you can find in hotels, B&Bs, cottages and villas.

Now in my new life I book all the family holidays, whether in England or abroad, and the one thing I have found is how bad some of the photos are of the interiors of holiday properties. In order for me to book a holiday cottage it has to tick a certain number of boxes before I even start to look at the price and availability.

Firstly, I inspect the photos, if they dont past muster I go no further. So here are a few tips for making your holiday home look good for the prospective renter.

Clear all the clutter
Always show a photo of the bedrooms - purchase new cushions and a throw to add colour and a bit of luxury
Always show a photo of the kitchen - ensuring it is clean and clutter free
If showing photos of the bathroom have fluffy towels and accessories
Do have pictures on the walls to give a lived in feel (my father-in-law wouldn't book a gorgeous house in the Cotswolds because it looked too much like a show home and had nothing on the walls!
Turn on lights for photos to add atmosphere
If you have outside space ensure it is tidy and inviting - show a photo of the outside seating
And finally always have a photo of the front view of the house, villa, apartment, hotel

Remember your photos are what are going to sell your cottage, B&B, villa or hotel

Small Room - Big Ideas

You may have a traditional house, but you can still have a state of the art bathroom.

I recently worked on a very small bathroom in a Grade II listed cottage, and even with oak beams all over the room we were able to add an amazing walk in modern shower, as well as a Victorian bath, sink and toilet.

A great way to add style is to be daring in your choice of sink. I love the glass basins, which come in so many beautiful colours from lime green to bright red – a real WOW for any bathroom, and remember you do not have to by a 3-piece set, you can buy the sink, toilet and bath separately. But do remember to keep the style similar.

A soak in a bath is relaxing, and for something a little different why not try a spa or whirlpool bath. Whirlpools are good for massaging, but can be a little noisy. Spa baths are less expensive, but don't have the massaging effect of a whirlpool. They have a much more gentle touch.

Its Just an Illusion

Very often the bathroom is the smallest room in the house, but you can still create the illusion of space.

Firstly keep the floor clutter free – go for wall mounted fittings.

Mirrors used cleverly reflect light as well as giving the illusion of space.

Give the illusion of space by using whites or pale colours. You can give the room a lift by adding a contrasting colour in the towels and accessories. At this point also think about lighting – nowadays you don't just have to have one single pendant light. Look at task lighting above mirrors, and perhaps lighting at floor level.

Instead of a radiators opt for a wall mounted heated towel rail.

If the space really is small why not use a corner sink.

To stream line the entire look position all the fittings along one wall.

And as always, good storage is the key to staying clutter free.

Clear The Clutter

Recently whilst having supper with a very good friend, she asked me if I would consider helping to declutter her home, especially her workroom and studio. She works from home and doesn't have the time or the inclination to do it herself and more to the point she can't move for “stuff”.

This got me thinking – there are so many people out there surrounded by clutter, and not knowing where to start on the journey to a clutter free life. Feng Shui Practioners believe that clutter drains energy from you. Depending on the feng shui area of your home where your clutter is located, it can also negatively influence, or even completely block, the flow of events in specific areas of your life. So it sounds like it really would be of benefit to my friend and possibly her business to rid herself of the clutter!

In order to help you get started with decluttering and to regain your high energy levels I have put together a few tips on decluttering.

We very often hold on to things for emotional reasons, but do we really need to keep every birthday card, postcard, magazine we have received in the last few years? If you wanted you could always photograph the postcards and birthday cards and keep a record of them on your PC.
Choose a day when the weather is fine, and move everything out of the room you are decluttering and take outside. I find it is always more invigorating to work in the fresh air rather than staying indoors.
Sort your clutter into three piles – one for taking to the local tip, one for either donating to a charity shop or for selling on-line and the other all the items you want to keep. Do be firm with yourself - if you haven't used something for the last twelve months the chances are you never well, so get rid of it.
With the donate or sell pile – you must immediately deliver everything earmarked for the charity shop (do not be tempted to let it back in the house). Photograph everything to be sold on-line and get it on there.
Now work on the “Keep” pile. Decide if it will go back in the same room. Perhaps have some labelled boxes on one side in which you can place items for different rooms.
Once all the clutter has gone, you can organise your room. For a fresh look perhaps re-arrange the furniture. Make sure you have enough storage for the items that are coming back to the room – you don't want to re-clutter the room.

Decluttering your home or workplace can be so therapeutic. Now you have tackled one room why not move on to the next?

CASE STUDY - Stairs & Landings

Background

The hall, stairs and landing were dark and a little bit dreary, with dark walls and little lighting.

The Brief

To design a hallway that was light and had a “wow” factor.

The Design

The ceilings were all painted white, and the walls painted with a Farrow & Ball emulsion – Farrows Cream. Downlighters were used in the ceiling in the hallway and on the landing.

A carpet from Ulster carpets was chosen, with a small pindot design for the landing, and a matching runner for the stairs. We then used brass stairrods for added interest on the stairs.

A beautiful brass lantern was sourced from Bella Figura as the central lighting at the top of the stairs, and the “wow” was created with a fantastic interlined curtain with a swarovski crystal trim down the leading edge. This gives the most amazing effect when the sun shines through the window.

Client's Verdict

“Katrina has transformed the entrance to the house. The curtain on the landing is amazing! I love it all!”

Storage - Can you ever have too much?

I am always banging on about storage, and people are always moaning they don't have enough. So why don't we tackle these issues. Believe me if you tackle them now, whether with the help of a professional designer or on your own, it will give an immediate sense of relief.

To create a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere in any living space you will need to have your storage blend in with existing pieces. Trunks, whether antique or modern that also act as a lamp tables or occasional tables, also make great homes for the children's toys or books or a whole host of clutter that we just can't bear to be parted from!

Rattan baskets lined up on shelves look great and will hide all sorts of things. If you don't have enough room left on your shelves, then lined up on the floor will look just as good.

I love fabric covered ottomans. If you have an old one, or perhaps come across one in a car boot sale – it wont cost too much to have it recovered to blend in with your existing furnishings. They have a multitude of uses from filing cabinets, to tables, to seating and at the same time house your clutter. A really good investment!

Space is important in any property so use all the nooks and crannies in your home – add fitted cupboards or shelving, right up to the ceiling if necessary and then have fronts put on that will match the existing style of your home. If you don't want them to stand out, then paint them the same colour as your walls. I find that painting the wood in an eggshell will give a beautiful matt finish, whilst blending with the walls.

Have fun visiting car boot sales, antique shops or charity shops to find unusual pieces that can be turned into storage. Whether your style is rustic, contemporary or classical if you take the time to look you will find some real treasures out there that you will enjoy for many years to come.

Alongside Tsarine Ltd we have just finished the renovation of a kitchen in a Grade II listed cottage in Wisborough Green. This was not an easy task. You never know what you are going to find when you are taking down walls in old buildings.

We discovered an old beam behind a false wall, which we decided had to stay, but meant a few changes to our original design. We also had problems with squaring everything up, when dealing with "wibbly wobbly" walls as I like to call them. Although I don't have the final photo of the finish. Here are a few photos to give you an idea of what the job entailed.

Is Wallpaper For You?

We all know wallpaper is back - but do we know what to do with it?

Go BOLD!!!

Wallpaper creates a visual impact, go for something striking on just one wall. I am told this is "recession proof style" as you only need a couple of rolls of wallpaper for the average feature wall.

There is so much choice out there, anything from traditional to geometrical, florals, and flock. Something for every budget and taste.

When first contemplating wallpaper, think about what style would look best in your home. Consider the furniture and decor already in the room. If your home is modern then a flock may not be suitable. Or if your room is busy with lots already happening in the room then perhaps go for something eye catching, but just on the one wall.

If budget is not a problem, then perhaps you might consider something a little more unusual - there are wallpapers out there on the market with crystals, fake fur, stitched paper and others. They will certainly WOW your guests.

If you want to hang the wallpaper yourself then ensure that you have done the preparation - walls must be clean and prepped to get the best from the wallpaper. Badly hung wallpaper really is very noticeable.

Designing Kids Rooms

How do you create the room your child wants, but also one that doesn't have to be redecorated when he/she has become fed up with football, fairies, aliens or the latest TV show? Hopefully with a few design tips this can be accomplished and without having to spend a fortune.

Before you get out the paint pots and fabric swatches, get to know what is in your child's room – just how many toys have they got? Have they outgrown some? How much storage and what type will you need? There is no point spending the cash just to have a beautifully decorated room, but the floor is still covered in toys and bits and bobs. Spend a day going through the room and then list exactly what is needed.

Drawers
Storage for toys and books
Somewhere to put certificates, party invites, postcards etc
Seating
Desk

Involving the Kids
Once you know what you want to achieve start to involve the children. What are their favourite colours? What toys couldn't they bear to be parted from? If they could choose just one item for their room what would it be?

Theming
Themes can be great or a real headache. I would advise, unless you don't mind changing the room every couple of years, against big beautiful murals of favourite characters that will be forgotten about in a year or two. Instead why not look at using large stickers, that can easily be removed from the walls. You can buy packs of 60 large room stickers for around £40.00.

I was recently asked to put together a theme for two young boys – we chose an “under the sea” theme for the youngest and “space” for the older child. It was decided that the children could put their own stickers on one wall, in that way they felt part of the whole process. We also used the stickers to decorate plastic bins for their room (saving a huge amount of money off of themed bins).

Storage
I am always talking about storage – but we never seem to have enough of it – especially for children. Children hoard all sorts of things, from playing cards, to cuddly toys, dolls, cars, building blocks, and the list goes on.

Where possible I don't believe in spending a lot of money if I don't have to, especially for a childs' bedroom. Plastic trugs are fabulous for holding kids toys. They come in lots of different colours and only cost around £10.00 each. Label them up, so that children will know which one cuddlies go in, which one cars and tractors, which one for Action Man.

Knick Knacks
I love to have somewhere for a child to display his/her works of art, or party invites and certificates. This is where a pinboard comes into its own. These can either be upholstered pinboards, or magnetic pinboards. They can be colourful to match the rest of the room, or metal magnetic ones.

These are just a few ideas to get you started. I am sure that alongside your own ideas and those of your child you will end up with a truly unique bedroom that you will all love.

HAVING FUN WITH SAMPLE BOARDS

When it comes to redesigning a room in your home the possibilities can be endless. Unless you have a clear idea of colour and the kind of look you want to achieve, it can be really difficult to know where to start. Creating a sample board can be a very valuable exercise in helping you reach your decision.

Cost Effective and Fun
Sample boards are a cost effective way of playing with colour, texture and ideas for your new scheme. They are a scaled down version of what you are hoping to achieve. The advantage of using a sample board is that you can see what the scheme is going to look like before going ahead, and perhaps avoid costly mistakes.

It really is great fun compiling a sample board. On a course I ran last year, people really let their creative juices flow – from a traditional dining room to a very bright orange and pink teenager's room. It was great fun and created much hilarity.

The sample board contains samples of actual products that you intend using in the room, and will give you more of an idea as to the finished décor. You can also see how the different features in a room will look and work together, such as flooring, wall coverings, window dressings and other soft furnishings along with furniture and lighting. If you can't get hold of a sample, then a picture or photograph will suffice.

When starting your sample board start with one piece that you want to build the whole room around – it may be your favourite armchair, or a certain wallpaper or even the rug you bought in Morroco on holiday last year. A good idea when using something you already have, is to take a photo of it and stick the photo on your sample board to see how it works in relation to other colours.

When putting together your sample board locate the samples in a similar position to where they would be in the room, for example flooring will be placed at the bottom of the sample board and wall covering towards the top. It is also a good idea to size your samples similarly to those used in the scheme – larger samples for flooring, smaller ones for cushions.

Top Tips For Designing a Home Office

Whilst manning the Sussex Women in Business stand at Microbiz last month I was amazed at the number of people starting up their own businesses, and the vast majority of them planning to work from home. Business Link South East carried out a survey in August 2009, from which it emerged that over 325,000 businesses or 44% of all SME’s in the South East are home based. With this in mind I have put together some tips on setting up your home based office.

The first step is to think about what you want from a home office and how much space you have. It is great if you have an extra room, or can convert a garage or as I did, build a home office at the bottom of the garden. However many people do not have this luxury. In a survey conducted by Enterprise Nation, 48.2% of those questioned said they conducted their home business from the spare room.

Combining with Your Living Space
Firstly, you have to be organised and tidy, otherwise chaos will ensue. Invest in storage and/or a good desk with plenty of drawers. Make the space your dedicated work space – somewhere you can claim as your own.

Plan Your Decorating Scheme
It is a good idea to spend some time contemplating your colour scheme, as colours can influence the mood of a room. Pastel shades are calming and soothing, yellow is stimulating, whilst blue will focus the mind. Bright shades of orange or pink are great for energy and socialising. Whatever colour scheme you choose don't forget to choose one that reflects what the room is used for the majority of the time.

A Room With a View
Plenty of light is good for your mood. However too much and you might not be able to see the computer screen, and as over 97% of home based businesses require the use of a computer and broadband this is a major consideration. A room with a view will help your creativity – my office window looks out across the garden – which never fails to inspire!

What Window Treatment
Blinds are the most practical choice for an office environment, as they can be adjusted to prevent glare and allow as much or as little light into the room as you require. You can go for a plain roman blind, roller or venetian. One that matches your colour scheme will look great.

Let There Be Light
Good task lighting is essential. Opt for a desk light as well as overhead lighting. If your desk is small then why not look at using clamp lights – simply clip them where you need most light.

Equipment
As always good storage is essential. A desk with plenty of room to house your keyboard and screen, somewhere for the printer, the telephone and a filing cabinet. A comfortable, supportive office chair is very very important, and this is where it might be best to spend a little more money. Try not to place your desk so that you have your back to the door, this can be very distracting.

Something I couldn't get by without is my wall planner, so that I can see on a month by month basis the projects I have coming up.

The client had recently moved into the house, and although the kitchen was already very nice, she wanted something a little bit more modern and one that worked for her family.

The wall between the dining room and kitchen was taken out, a new high gloss white kitchen was installed with black granite worktops and a central island.

Karndean flooring was fitted to finish the room off.

In November 2009 we started work on a kitchen design in Steyning. The client had moved into the property in October and wanted to completely renovate the property ready for Christmas - no problem!!

The renovation work included taking a wall down to open up the very small kitchen area, complete re-wire, new appliances, new flooring and a lovely new kitchen and decoration.

The kitchen was a Burbidge Lansdowne painted oak in sage.

Some Like It Hot

Radiators are big and ugly - right? Well they needn't be.

Radiators can create impact and make a statement within a room. They come in different shapes, patterns, textures and colours. They can be viewed as a piece of functional art.

But first how much heat do you need? There are two measurements for heat output BTUs and watts. Your designer should be able to confirm the exact requirements for each of your rooms. Most suppliers will have online calculators if you would like to work it out for yourself.

Consider where to place your radiators - if your property is older, then it is usual to place the radiators below or close to a window. However in more modern properties, where there is double glazing, insulation and draught proofing this means you can place a radiator almost anywhere.

Many designs are available either horizontal or vertical, which means you can maximise the use of ceiling height or long low spaces.

At last a beautiful house has been restored and remodelled to its full glory.

I first met one of the owners of this house at a course I was running on Interior Design back in April. I have since spent a lot of time with her and her husband advising on colours and designs, as well as implementing the final project. Today we hung the last of the curtains.

I do hope they have a long and happy life in their beautiful new home.

Cabin Fever

The great day arrived around 2 weeks ago when the cabin was delivered. It took 1.5 hours to take everything off the lorry and then a further 2 hours to move to back garden (lorry driver only paid to deposit in front garden!)

There the cabin sat for a week, as we waited with excitement for David, Roger, Ben and Gordon to arrive (otherwise known as Uncle David, Uncle Roger, Cousin Ben and Grampa - Granny had decided she would rather go to St Tropez - whatever for?). The morning of the erection arrived. Cooked breakfast (I am told builders must have one) and then thrown into the garden (them, not me). I drove off with son to his guitar lesson, wondering what I would come home to? Perhaps it would be built? Perhaps one of them was already in hospital? Perhaps the beers had already been opened?

Well, I have to say they had got a long way - all four walls were up. However they later informed me that was the easy, quick bit. The roof was not as simple, and seemed to go up and come down several times. Several cups of tea later and a round of fish and chips, and they were really cracking on. By the end of Saturday the roof was on and there was a window. Now they were off to the pub - back in an hour for dinner - funny - they didn't invite me to the pub??

Sunday dawned, and everyone was looking a little jaded but determined to complete the task - doors went on, waterproof membrane on roof and then wonderful workers had to return back to the cold North. They had done a fabulous job, and worked like Trojans. The rest was up to Duncan and I........

Now a Base

The weather held OK last week, and the Tingleys, with a little bit of help from Barney (more hindrance really) completed the base for the Garden Office. We were asked if we would like Barney footprints in the wet concrete (I thought they were joking - they were not) - it seems many dog owners like that sort of thing - I am obviously not a typical dog owner and declined.

Only problem now is - there are small bits of concrete in the garden which we have endeavoured to pick up, but invariably Barney finds them and eats them! Yes I do feed him, but he obviously thinks it is not enough, and as well as bananas now likes concrete!!!

The next step is the delivery of the Garden Office which is due on Monday 7th September. I can't wait.

The Tingleys Are Here

Last week Bob Tingley arrived with his tape measure to map out the area I wanted and to go away and come back with a quote that wouldn't distress my husband too much! We wanted the Tingleys to put down the reinforced concrete base, which will also include a damp-proof membrane. They will then come back after the cabin had gone up and put a stepping stone path down to the doorway of the cabin.

I know the Tingleys pretty well - they put a patio and pathway in at our previous house, and also have put in the driveway here and also a patio and pergola. They are a team of 3 brothers, who drink lots of tea and always seem to be happy. Their work is second to none. I highly recommend them.

Duncan and I spent the weekend clearing the area from all the undergrowth - we really had let the ivy take over the bottom of the garden. Yesterday the skip arrived - although we were unsure why we required a skip. The dog doesn't like the skip and refuses to walk past it - which is a bit difficult seeing as it has to be passed to get out of our drive. Hence me pulling and Barney sitting with his bum firmly entrenched on paving. He may not survive to see my garden office!!!

At 8am this morning theTingleys arrived - they will be with us for about 2 days. I introduced them to Barney (the dog) who seemed to make the right impression, only for him to let me down by interrupting Bob's break, by pinching his banana just as he was taking a bite! No banana left,including the skin! Me thinks Barney better stay indoors.

After digging down to measure everything out, it was declared that indeed a skip was not required and was being sent back - which meant we didn't have to pay for it (that should please Duncan). And now the digging starts - we are up against the weather as tomorrows forecast is not looking good.

Shed Living/Working

I have decided it is time to have an office at the bottom of our garden. I thought I would share my ongoing experiences over the next few weeks......

The idea came about, firstly due to cost of paying rent on the existing showroom and office and the desire to step out in my nightie from the kitchen to the office! OK so I am a little odd!

Proposed site

I decided working in the house, was not an option - I would have had to share the study with hubby, two kids and the hamster - not conducive to serious creative work. On top of which hubbies in-tray had a habit of spilling from the desk onto the floor on regular occasions! I am sure you get the picture.

The first step was trawling the various websites to find a suitable company to provide the garden office or shed (whatever you wish to call it). Found a site called http://www.shedworking.co.uk/ which had loads of useful information on the subject and a long list of suppliers. We settled on a company called Dunster House, it was extremely informative and we also knew two other people that had bought from them.

A bit of research confirmed we did not need planning permission if the height of the cabin was under 2.5m and the construction was at least 2m from our boundary. So far so good. Next to organise someone to lay the base ready for the cabin and to lay a pathway to it (don't want to get my slippers muddy on these rainy days)............

This red kitchen, we are re-working slightly - so will put our new design on very soon - the client has already seen the new design and has agreed it all - which is great. The kitchen will go in first week September.

Suddenly everyone is wanting a new kitchen. I am designing kitchens for 3 different clients at the moment, and they are all very different. One very traditional for a cottage, one very modern for a client of mine who I have worked for for many many years, and another kitchen which I haven't quite got my head around yet!

I love designing kitchens. Every kitchen is so different because everyone uses their kitchen differently and wants different things from it.

I shall keep posting about how these kitchens work out throughout the next few weeks.

DESIGN A ROOM WORKSHOP

Saturday saw the first of a series of Workshops taking place at the Showroom.

We had a really great group of people attend the first Workshop. They were enthusiastic and produced some great moodboards at the end of it. Some really good work.

We are working on a follow on course for people that have completed the first Workshop - so watch this space.

Unfortunately I had a cold so I hope I didn't pass it on to too many attendees.

It would be really good to hear from people that have attended workshops, to get their feedback.

GUEST BEDROOM - HANDCROSS

I have just completed a project to design and implement a new guest bedroom in a beautiful house in Handcross.

We used greys, pinks and silvers for the scheme. Our starting point being a feature wall using Farrow & Ball Rosslyn Papers in a powder pink and cream.

The curtains and pelmets were to be the centre piece of the whole scheme. They would hit the eye as soon as you walked into the room. I chose a Designers Guild fabric (Fredensborg), which we interlined. The pelmet was edged with the same Designers Guild fabric, but in the centre we used a different fabric - Designers Guild Striato in zinc, which we pleated. The effect was brilliant. This was then edged in a cord from Price & Co.

To finish off the curtains we used some beautiful tie-backs from Troynorth.

For the bedcover we used a Kandola silk - Balmoral pintuck, and placed cushions in the Designers Guild fabrics on the bed to bring the whole scheme together.

Lighting was provided by Sussex Lighting in Horsham

Having returned from my hols, now is the time to really get down to some hard work. There is certainly plenty happenning.

Kicking off today with a Women in Business meeting. I am the host, and our speaker is Francis Maude MP - I am looking forward to meeting him, and hearing his views on the local economy etc.

Tomorrow my daughter is in hospital having two teeth out, so work will take second place.

The rest of the week is going to be filled with putting the finishing touches to the Design A Room Workshop taking place at the end of the month. We are already fully booked, which is great, and getting there with the second one in May.

Some great projects coming up. Really exciting times!

Women in Business

Today is our event at South Lodge Hotel - always a popular venue. We are expecting 19 guests - so should make for a really interesting venue. Tim Fifield is talking about "Presenting". Tim is always great to listen to, and so entertaining!

This is going to be a busy week - as Women in Business are exhibiting at Horsham Microbiz on Saturday - tomorrow I have a meeting with printers to ensure the posters are ready for Microbiz, and all the handouts. Microbiz ia great day - it has a real buzz about it - with so many people there looking to start up new businesses or just wanting advice on running their business. It is a very positive experience.

I also have to get the two designs for the kitchens finalised this week - two very different kitchens - so good fun to work on.

It is also my sons opening night for Bugsy Malone at school this week - so very nervous and excited for him.

It's funny we complain when we are quiet and we complain when we are busy. The last few days I haven't had time to think let alone work.

Last week I looked at designing a kitchen, designing all the soft furnishings (6 roman blinds, 4 pairs curtain, 1 wooden blind and numerous cushions) for a 4-bedroom house, fitted 4 pairs curtains, swags and tails, blinds and poles for another house, put up poles in another house, finalised pelmets, blinds, bedcovers, curtains and trimmings for a most beautiful house, looked at designing a bar, and a drawing room, hosted 2 networking events, updated the details for the Design a Room Workshops, fed the kids, fed the husband, and washed numerous rugby kits, netballs kits etc etc etc

This week........

Still it keeps me out of trouble.

Workshops Galore

Today I am working on the programme of Workshops we will be offering at the Studio as from April. This is a very exciting venture for me, and I am determined to get it right. We already have 3 people booked on to the first "Design A Room" Workshop at the end of April - so good news so far. All the advertising starts in a couple of weeks time, with 5,000 postcards being delivered locally and a whole page spread going into Holbrook Pages. Seeing Greg Rhodes tomorrow to discuss further PR.

Goodbye to Rupert

Last night Rupert died. Rupert is (or rather was) the children's pet hamster. Have you ever tried to explain death to an 11 year old and 9 year old? It was heartbreaking. My son sobbed himself to sleep. He was the one that discovered Rupert in the cage. Today Rupert will be buried, the children are discussing the best place, whether it should be under the rose bush, near the house, away from the house? They are dealing with it, and life will go on. But Rupert will be remembered. He may only have been a hamster - but he was still part of the family.

New Studio Opens

I have been very remiss at updating my blog, but will try to remedy that from now on. So much has been happening in the world of True Colours Interiors since November of last year.

The Showroom has opened and is proving a great success. We have had two articles printed in local newspapers all about it, which is great.

We have now opened the second phase of the Showroom - The Studio - which is a great space that is being used by local businesses. We had a great photographic session take place in the Studio last week, and all of next week it has been taken over by Nick Hobbs, who has been commissioned to paint a jungle mural for a local home. So the backwall is undergoing a transformation for the week.

The Studio is available to rent on a daily basis, and we are also going to be running Design Workshops there as from April - so plenty going on!

NEW SHOWROOM - NOW OPEN

Well we made it! We opened on time and our visitors have been most complimentary. It has given me a real sense of achievement.

Our clients are finding it a great facility in which to sit down and relax over a cuppa and discuss designs for their rooms, soft furnishings etc.

And even the puppy got in on the act!!!

Next thing to organise is the luanch party for November!!

One Week To Go!!

The big day is drawing nearer. My house looks like a warehouse at the moment, boxes of sample books and fabrics and wallpaper and flooring all over the place, ready to go up to the new showroom.

The painter and electrician have nearly finished, and everything is beginning to take shape. The sofa arrives tomorrow morning, which I can't wait to see.

We have lots of people volunteering next week to help get everything ready for Wednesday - so really looking forward to it.

Two Kids, One Puppy, One Husband and a Flat out Mum

Running your own business is anything but easy, so why did I go and make life even more difficult by agreeing to hubyy and kids request for a puppy????

Barney the Goldren Retriever arrived three weeks ago, aged just 8 weeks old, looking very cute and cuddly. However it is like having another baby - without the pain!! He loves the delivery men, when they come delivering all the lovely new items for the Showroom, and they seem to like him, until he nips their ankles that is.

The kids fight over who will take him out and even about who will feed him, but at least it ensures they get up early to be the first one downstairs to say hello to Barney. Hubby now gets up at 6am and I get a cup of tea in bed - can't be bad.

I am hopeful that once trained (how long can it take?) Barney can come to the Showroom with me, and enjoy interior design as much as me!

NEW SHOWROOM OPENING SOON

I am so excited, over the past few weeks I have been unable to write anything on my blog as I have been hard at work organising the opening of my first ever Showroom!

The Showroom will be based at Church Lane Estate, Mannings Heath, and is as I type undergoing the necessary transformation to turn it into a beautiful looking Showroom, in which I can show off fabrics, wallpapers, floorings, furniture etc etc.

The plastering is taking place at the moment to give me nice smooth walls on which to display beautiful poles and fabrics. The decorating should take place next week, and then the flooring goes down on Monday 22nd September.

Opening date is due to be 1st October - watch this space.

Bathroom Lighting

We have now finished the two bathrooms we were working on, both the shower room, and luxury ensuite. Happily our clients are very very happy with both projects.

The bathroom is one of the favourite places to relax, and our client with the new ensuite can certainly relax in her new room, complete with Sky TV!

Full advantage needs to be taken of all the lighting possibilities for the bathroom. There are now contemporary and modern light fittings available, not only the plain flushes of old.

You do need to bear in mind regulations. The bathroom is split into three zones which indicate the type of fitting that can be used. Each fitting is given an IP (Ingress Protection) rating. This number indicates the level to which the fitting is sealed.

Bathroom wiring regulations were last updated in January 2008. The bathroom is now zoned 0, 1 and 2. 0 is classed as the interior of a bath or shower.

With all the new fittings available the bathroom can now be a great place to make the most of modern living. After all, we put so much effort into choosing fittings such as taps etc, so why not spend the effort on lighting as well.

Getting The Best Price for your House

Research has shown that spending as little as £200 on your home can increase its selling price by up to 10%. And in todays current market this is very important indeed.

Take a fresh look. Ask someone to give you an unbiased opinion about your property.
First impressions do count! Does the front door need a fresh coat of paint? Does the garden look appealing?

Is your home clean and uncluttered? Special attention should be given to bathrooms and the kitchen.

If you have a spare bedroom, ensure it looks like a bedroom, and not a dumping ground.

Create good lighting. Add table lamps, uplighters. Turn the lamps on for viewings. Cleaning your windows can instantly brighten up the room.

Ensure the master bedroom looks inviting – sumptuous, and if you have a graden make the most of it.

True Colours Interiors recently helped sell a two bedroom apartment in Horsham. The estate agent valued it at £150,000. We advised the client to put in a new kitchen, and change the colour scheme. We also made a few small changes to the lighting and accessories. This cost a total of £5000.00
The client sold her apartment to the first couple through the door for a price of £165,000.

A good result indeed!

One Down, One To Go

One bathroom has been completed, and what a transformation. Flooring was Priory Oak from Amtico, the shower was an off set curved shower from Novellini. Cabinets and doors were from Howdens.

The luxury bathroom is around three weeks away from completion - tiling still ongoing (the tiler counted the small mosaic tiles and reliably informed me there were 2204! and then the electrics will be completed along with the installation of the sanitary ware (I cant wait to see the beautiful Fired Earth bath in situ. Then last of all Dave the Decorator arrives for the decorating.

I'm Back

I have been so busy over the last couple of weeks I have been unable to update my Blog - so at last I am back.

The last two weeks have seen the finish of one of the bathrooms we have been working on, and the other nearing completion! Tiles are on walls, TV is set into the wall and floor tiles just going in. It is looking fab - I shall post more up to date pictures next week.

Yesterday saw me doing something a lttle different - a fashion show! I had to model clothing in aid of the charity - CHASE - St Christophers Hospice for Children - a most worthwhile cause. What a fab time we had as well as raisign funds for the Charity.

Next week is an interesting one - I am visiting a Funeral Parlour to look at refurbishing their premises, and installing a new Chapel of Rest. It is always great to work on something a little different so I am really looking forward to this.

I have also put forward my proposal for the design of the interior of a 7-bedroom Victorian house - fingers crossed!!

I promise to write a little more next week.

DRESS TO IMPRESS

A window is very often the major focal point within a room, therefore its dressing requires careful attention and thought.

Windows should enhance the character of your room.

Each window should be treated both individually and as a group within a room.
Where to start : -

Do you require privacy?
Do you need lots of light?
Do you want to get the most from a beautiful view, or disguise an ugly one?
What is the function of the room?
Do you want trimmings?

You can change the atmosphere of a room just by varying the fabric or style of curtain. You can go from classic to modern and the room is transformed.

Design Tip : Need privacy, overlooked by neighbours? Hate those old net curtains? Then why not have a roman blind made in a voile, there are so many beautiful inexpensive voiles to choose from, from plain to embroidered, from white to all the colours of the rainbow.

Bank Holiday Looming - Hooray

It will be great for today to finish and the Bank Holiday to start - I intend to put my feet up and relax with a glass or two of wine.

This week has been hectic

Monday - confirm paint colours for 5-bedroom house, host a networking meeting for The Womens Networking Company - 19 attendees - great meeting, then off to attend daughters swimming gala - she came first in her race - brilliant. Home - cook tea, and then off to confirm design for a guest bedroom, order carpet, fabric and paint.
Tuesday - had a meeting with a lady to discuss kitchen blinds and curtains, which led to discussion on whether daughter would be able to pull them down or not! Next a lady who wanted new seating for her conservatory - got attacked by her dog - but survived to tell the tale. Managed to have the vening off.
Wednesday - meeting with client who is having the bathroom extension - she doesn't like the new window - "please get rid off and get a new one" - builder not too happy. Other than that she is happy. Have to order the black tiles for floor and walls, and get TV to builder for Friday.
Thursday - son is ill - take him to doctor who says to keep an eye on him as he may have appendicitis - thats all I need.
Friday - pay the bills!!!!
Don't worry I wont be writing a blow by blow account of my week every week, I just needed to get it out of my system.

Another day....

Today started well - my 10 year old woke me up at 6:15am(that wasn't so good) with a cup of tea. Dad's away so he's the man of the house until tonight!

Finally get his sister out of bed and fed and we are off to school at 7:45am. Arrive at school, have to track down headmaster to get into his garage to obtain pole stomper (or something like that for the school fete). Garage door closes on headmaster's head nearly knocking him out! Not sure if that is good or bad! Spend most of the morning sorting thorugh box after box of dirty dusty books ready for the book stall for the fete. At least I was inside, others were out putting up tents in the rain.

Midday I am at a meeting with client who is unhappy because the builder has used his loo and not flushed it. Would I remind the builder to flush! Next meeting - the plumber who seems to have decided to either not see me or lost his voice, either way I am ready to make sure he hears mine.

We have knocked through into new ensuite, and piping is going in ready for bathroom utilities and the underfloor heating. Mustn't forget to ensure the fantastic bath from Fired Earth is ready to arrive on time. Also got to order the TV and work out how many tiles we will need for both the floor and tiles. Next pick up lights for another client who needs them for her bricklayer tomorrow. Her patio is ahead of schedule so I need to get ahead as well.

Back to the office to sort out a colour scheme for a 5-bedroom house, using neutrals but still needing to see some colour. Neutrals are great to play around with, and there are so many variations of white - have you looked at all the colour cards you can get for paints these days?

4:30pm and it is almost time to go and pick kids up from Swimming Training and then get son to Cubs.

Who knows what tomorrow may bring....

Don't always go for the cheapest – he may be cheap, but is he professional, reliable, clean??
Ensure you have a detailed quotation, outlining everything that is included in the job
Take up references from recent work undertaken
Check that your builder is fully insured.
Check that the price quoted includes VAT
Ensure electricians are Part P registered.
It may seem expensive to call in the professionals but remember what it is you are paying for:-

En-suite bathroom extension

This is an ongoing project, which started on 10 April 2008. The extension is for a new en-suite bathroom. The bathroom will be a luxury bathroom with inset TV and a beautiful stand-alone bath.

I intend to upload photos at each stage of the project.

This week we should be installing the window and starting the internal work.

External building work all complete. Window about to go in. Now it is down to the plumber and electrician.

And So it Begins......

Having listened to a talk about blogging, and having been thinking about blogging for so long, I have decided to take the bull by the horns and begin.

I am an interior designer, busy mother, and must also be crazy to think I can do so much - but hey ho!!

Today is no different to any other - off to see a lady who wants her whole house remodelled and another lady who needs new conservatory blinds. The car is packed with samples, the children are on the school mini-bus and I am about to sit down with a cup of tea and contemplate each of today's clients.

Also have to go and check on the progress on a new en-suite extension we are building - has the new window arrived yet? and more importantly is the client still happy with us?
